Guide for Teachers and Facilitators
The four Let It Being games are free, run in any browser, and take 5–10 minutes per play. Students live through data-grounded “lifetimes” that spark discussion about communities, well-being and life itself.
Which game to use
Learning goals (A Thousand Lives)
- Notice that the effect of a facility or policy depends on who it reaches and where people live.
- Think about allocating a limited budget amid population decline and aging.
- Explain policy effects with evidence by comparing with the “do-nothing town.”
- Come to see community problems as one’s own.
A 45-minute lesson (example)
| Time | Activity | Notes |
| 5 min | Warm-up: guess your own town’s population and age structure | Choose from 1,740 real municipalities |
| 3 min | Learning check (before) | Add ?class=1 to the link to turn it on. 3 questions + a 1–5 attitude item |
| 15 min | Play: 2–3 students play separately with the same challenge code | A challenge code gives everyone the same town and conditions |
| 3 min | Learning check (after) | Answer on the results screen to see the change instantly |
| 12 min | Compare result cards and the “Reflect and learn” section | Compare population, well-being and wishes granted |
| 7 min | Discuss one “Think about it” question | Use facility locations and resident dots on the map as evidence |
Using the learning check
- Add
?class=1 to the end of the link you share (e.g. …/sennin/en/?class=1).
- Before and after playing, students answer the same three questions and a 1–5 item: “I can think of my community’s problems as my own.”
- Records stay on each device, with no names. Export them as CSV from “For teachers and facilitators” on the start screen.
- Compare class averages before and after to check the learning effect.
Worksheet questions
A Thousand Lives
- Whose life did your strongest area change most — children, working-age adults or older people? Explain why.
- What separated districts where well-being grew from those where it didn’t? Use the map as evidence.
- Merger, partnership or independence: what did your choice gain, and what did it cost?
- In the real town, what would you do first as mayor?
Born in This Town
- How did the town you were born in shape your life?
- Compared with “the other you,” what made the difference in satisfaction?
- What changed when you shifted how you spent your time (work, family, community, yourself)?
Rinne-roku / A Straw’s Journey
- Is a short life a poor life? Think about each creature’s role. (Rinne-roku)
- Item value or the ties you made: which should count more when measuring a rich life? (A Straw’s Journey)
About the data
Population and age structure come from Japan’s 2020 Census, lifespans from the 2020 prefectural life tables, and well-being from the Cabinet Office survey on satisfaction and quality of life (Japan average 5.79, 2025). Town layouts and policy effects are simplified models for learning.
